Welcome to MTSU's Professional Counseling Programs
Are you thinking about a degree in counseling? Are you interested in working as a clinical mental health or school counselor? If yes, the MTSU Professional Counseling Program may be your answer!
Many people choose to pursue a degree in counseling because they want to help others who are experiencing difficulties in life. People want to be helpers for a variety of reasons. Maybe they have been helped by someone else or have had good experiences in counseling themselves. Maybe they have been told they have good listening skills by others in their lives or that they make people feel comfortable talking about personal issues. Whatever reason has brought you to our site, we hope you find valuable information to help you follow your path. The choice of where to begin your career path as a counselor is as important as the choice to become a counselor.
The field of counseling is expanding, and overall employment is expected to increase. Certain areas of counseling are expected to experience even higher rates of growth. For example, according to ONet, both the mental health and school counseling fields have a “bright outlook.” (https://www.onetonline.org/link/summary/21-1014.00; https://www.onetonline.org/link/summary/21-1012.00). The US Bureau of Labor Statistics website states the employment of “mental health counselors is projected to grow 23 percent from 2020 to 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations” (https://www.bls.gov/ooh/community-and-social-service/substance-abuse-behavioral-disorder-and-mental-health-counselors.htm#tab-6). The school counseling field “is projected to grow 11 percent from 2020 to 2030, faster than the average for all occupations” (https://www.bls.gov/ooh/community-and-social-service/school-and-career-counselors.htm#tab-6).
