Workshop Description:

Conflict is a natural part of working with students, colleagues, and campus partners, and how advisors respond to challenging situations can significantly influence relationships, trust, and student success. This interactive workshop equips advisors with practical conflict management and professional communication strategies grounded in the NACADA Core Competencies, with an emphasis on the Relational Competency. Participants will explore common sources of conflict in advising, learn techniques for navigating difficult conversations with empathy and professionalism, and examine how Appreciative Advising principles can foster collaboration, de-escalate tension, and promote productive outcomes. Through case studies and guided discussion, advisors will practice applying conflict resolution strategies to realistic advising scenarios while maintaining a student-centered, solutions-focused approach.

NACADA Core Competency alignment:

  • R2: Create rapport and build academic advising relationships.
  • R3: Communicate in an inclusive and respectful manner.
  • R4: Plan and conduct successful advising interactions.
  • R6: Facilitate problem solving, decision-making, meaning-making, planning, and goal setting.
  • R7: Engage in on-going assessment and development of the advising practice.
