Workshop Day 1: Appreciative Advising Overview
Appreciative Advising is the collaborative practice of asking generative, open ended questions to help students achieve their dreams, goals, and potentials. The six phases of Appreciative Advising, Disarm, Discover, Dream, Design, Deliver, and Don’t Settle have been applied by educators in one to one advising relationships, in programming and classrooms, and to drive institutional approaches to student success. This presentation explores theory-to-practice applications of the framework through a variety of collaborative and reflective activities. This session is aligned with NACADA’s relational competencies.
Workshop Day 2: Continuum of Dreaming
This session explores the theory-to-practice applications Appreciative Advising to support students through the entire student lifecycle. Starting at pre-admission, we will explore what the research tells us about the needs of students. We will explore strategies to help students expand their ideas about their futures, and how to then co-create a plan for achieving those goals. In addition, we will explore ways to help students pivot when they encounter barriers to achieving their goals.
