Current Focus: A Mineralogical and Geochemical Study of the Copper Basin Anticlinorium

Project Description

I have been working on a team URECA project studying the rocks of an old mining town in the southern Blue Ridge Mountains. We collected rock samples from an anticline and spent the last year learning how to geochemically analyze the samples to determine the composition of the rocks and geologic history of the area. We aimed to find why copper-bearing ores primarily formed in the center of the anticline rather than along the margins and why secondary mineralization is more prominent along the east margin.

Why does this topic interest you?

I enjoy the combination of both field and lab work that geoscience provides. I love studying the composition of the rocks and looking under the microscope to see how the minerals align together. I have been able to learn so many important lab procedures throughout this project that I will benefit from for the rest of my career.

What are your professional aspirations?

I hope to continue my academic career by doing geoscience research through graduate school. I have found a passion for science communication and making science in general more accessible. I hope to pursue a career that allows me to foster outreach to those less knowledgeable on the importance of geoscience.

Do you have any advice for future researchers?

You are capable! Don’t doubt yourself; there’s a reason you’re doing research. Never stop asking questions, no matter how minuscule they may seem. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes or ask for help
