Since the 2021-2022 Academic Year, 70 sections of courses have been assigned to JUB 204 (an average of eight each semester). Over that period, 1,494 students have had class in the room, an average of 187 students each semester. The space, which has a maximum capacity of 29 students, is used primarily by the Philosophy and Religious Studies department, but Communications, English, and Women’s and Gender Studies classes have also been assigned to JUB 204. In addition to its long, narrow layout, the room faces significant issues impacting student learning and safety. The single TV monitor is too small for the room’s configuration, making it difficult for many students to view essential lecture materials, especially with glare from windows and lighting. The podium's placement restricts the instructor’s movement, limiting access to technology and interaction with students. Additionally, the classroom door lacks a passkey card system or window, creating a safety concern as it is impossible to identify whether someone at the door is a tardy student or a potential threat. Addressing these challenges is essential to creating a more effective, accessible, and secure learning environment. To address these issues, we propose converting JUB 204 to a Smart Classroom equipped with appropriate technology to support today’s learning standards. This includes a touchscreen TV, projector, screen, video equipment to support multiple screens, and a ceiling microphone. Finally, to enhance security for our students and faculty, a proxy-card reader and security door with a window are also requested.
