MTSU’s UAS Operations and UAS Technology concentrations offer one of the largest experiential learning programs in the U.S., preparing students for success in the expanding UAS industry. To stay competitive, students must gain hands-on flight experience with cutting-edge technology. This proposal aims to support 55 UAS majors and 14 minors (AY 23-24) in courses AERO 3711, 3721, 3731, 4701, and 4710. The requested equipment will enhance training and promote research and collaboration with internal and external partners. Due to recent federal mandates for Blue list and NDAA-compliant drones, many of our current systems are nearing or have reached the end of their lifecycle and require upgrades. This grant will fund two Blue/NDAA-listed drone systems: the eBee X and Wingtra, equipped with mapping and multispectral sensors that will support both the UAS program and the Agriculture Department’s precision agriculture research. The XAG P-100 agricultural drone will give students valuable aerial application experience while benefiting the MTSU farm with reduced crop treatment costs. UAS students also assist MTSU Facilities with roof inspections, campus mapping, and steam pipe inspections. The L2 LiDAR sensor will enable precise campus mapping, providing further hands-on opportunities. Additionally, the Aerospace Department requires a non-operational engine used in our DA-40 aircraft, which will be used in classrooms to enhance system knowledge. The motor will be modified by maintenance students to allow learners to view the inner workings. This equipment investment will ensure our program continues to produce highly skilled graduates ready to tackle the challenges of the UAS industry.
